If you'd like to be able to record corneal thickness measurements in different exam lanes or even different practice sites, Accutome offers the PachPen handheld pachymeter. The company says the device is easy to use, fits comfortably in the hand, employs state-of-the-art waveform analysis and has a probe that samples at a rate of 65 MHz in order to obtain precise readings. It can also store and average nine measurements and calculate intraocular pressure corrections based on the corneal thickness. The PachPen weighs 3 ounces and uses lithium batteries. A New Way to View the Anterior Segment

Haag-Streit says its new BD900 slit lamp features easy-to-use controls to help anterior-segment exams go smoother than ever.

In addition to a halogen bulb that gives up to 300,000 lux illumination and a microscope with powers of 10X and 16X, the BD900 has a built-in video port that accepts commercially available C-mount cameras, allowing physicians to perform high-resolution digital and video imaging. The C-mount is a camera/lens standard that's commonly found on certain digital and 16-mm film cameras.

The light slit can be adjusted from 0 to 14 mm, and the slit lamp comes with gray, redfree, blue and yellow filters. Haag-Streit says the instrument base is easy to operate, and features an illumination control that's right next to the joystick, and a magnification power selector located just beneath the microscope. Flexible Iris Retractors

.
Katena's bright blue micro retractors are only 10-mm long and can be easily inserted through four evenly spaced limbal paracenteses to gently stretch and retain the iris for maximum visibility during cataract surgery. Once the iris is hooked and retracted, the surgeon slides the tiny adjustable silicone "donut" up to the limbus to secure the hook in place. Katena offers these retractors in sterile, disposable packages of five retractors (K20-3890), and in a reusable version with six retractors in an autoclaveable Teflon sterilizing case (K3-4970). Magnification and Field of View

Volk Optical's new Digital Wide Field non-contact diagnostic lens allows doctors to avoid the traditional trade-off between wide field of view and high magnification. Volk says the lens provides the widest field of view available in a non-contact lens, paired with the higher magnification required for detailed diagnostic work and imaging.

With a 103°/124° (static/dynamic) field of view, the Digital Wide field provides visualization similar to a contact lens, without the associated interface solution application and patient discomfort. At the same time, the .72x magnification produces a more detailed view of the macula and disc. This two-in-one design saves time usually spent switching lenses mid-exam. The Digital Wide Field lens design also provides excellent visualization for patients with small pupils. Visit volk.com, call 1 (800) 345-8655, or contact your authorized Volk distributor.

Flap Applanator for LASIK, LASEK

The Johnston LASIK & LASEK Applanator (05-7003: Titanium & 8-16149: Stainless), developed in coordination with Robert M. Johnston, MD, is designed to apply equal outward posterior pressure to the flap for even egress of fluid to consistently enhance the seating and healing of the flap to the stromal bed and prevent striae with a minimum amount of time and surgical skill.

Rhein says the special concave posterior lens surface is designed to be pressed onto the flap to outwardly flatten the central cornea to resolve striae, enhancing centration and control over the distribution of applanated tissue. The transparent applanation lens offers clear visualization, allowing full view of the applanated surface through a microscope, and the special convex anterior lens surface eliminates light reflection, with a 9-mm inner circle in the lens for perfect centration and confirmation of the applanated surface. The device is easily applied to the flap without interference from the speculum, eyelids or nasal bridge for unencumbered access. It may be used for treating postoperative striae, and refloating and repositioning the flap. Contact Rhein Medical at 1 (800) 637-4346
